The Proclamation of the Irish Republic is the founding document of the 1916 Easter Rising. It was read aloud by Pádraig Pearse outside the General Post Office (GPO) in Dublin on Easter Monday, 24 April 1916, and it remains one of the most recognisable texts in Irish history.
What is the 1916 Proclamation?
The Proclamation was issued in the name of the Provisional Government of the Irish Republic to the people of Ireland. It opens with the words “Irishmen and Irishwomen: In the name of God and of the dead generations from which she receives her old tradition of nationhood, Ireland, through us, summons her children to her flag and strikes for her freedom.”
The seven signatories
- Thomas J. Clarke
- Seán Mac Diarmada
- Thomas MacDonagh
- P. H. Pearse
- Éamonn Ceannt
- James Connolly
- Joseph Plunkett
All seven were executed in early May 1916 following the Rising.
What the Proclamation promised
The document declared the right of the people of Ireland to the ownership of Ireland, guaranteed religious and civil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities to all its citizens, and pledged to cherish all the children of the nation equally. That language is a large part of why it is still read and quoted today.
