Easter Rising 1916 Timeline: What Happened Each Day

Easter Rising 1916 Irish heritage clothing by Proclamation Wear

The Easter Rising began on Easter Monday, 24 April 1916, when Irish republicans seized key locations in Dublin and declared an Irish Republic. Here is a short timeline of the week.

Monday 24 April 1916

Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army take the General Post Office and other positions across Dublin. Pádraig Pearse reads the Proclamation of the Irish Republic outside the GPO.

Tuesday to Friday

British forces bring in reinforcements and fighting spreads through the city centre. Much of central Dublin is badly damaged.

Saturday 29 April 1916

Pearse, on behalf of the Provisional Government, orders surrender. The Rising ends after six days.

3 to 12 May 1916

Fifteen leaders of the Rising, including all seven signatories of the Proclamation, are executed. Public opinion in Ireland shifted markedly in the following years.

Remembering 1916

Many people mark the history with commemorations, visits to the GPO and Kilmainham Gaol, and heritage clothing. Read about the Proclamation and its signatories, or explore our Irish heritage clothing.
